One of the most commonly used pool disinfectants is chlorine. It is a disinfectant that kills various disease-causing organisms and also keeps the pool water clean and clear. Without enough chlorine, pool water becomes cloudy and algae can grow, especially if there is a lack of water circulation. To keep your backyard pool clean and clear, you need to maintain the chemical balance of the water and promote proper water filtration and circulation.
Step 1
Use a pool water test kit to check the chemical composition of your backyard pool water. A healthy water pool should have the following levels: available free chlorine (FAC) of 2 to 4 parts per million (ppm), total chlorine of 0.2 ppm, pH level of 7.2 to 7.8, and calcium hardness of 200 to 350 ppm.
Step 2
Add the right pool chemicals for your backyard pool according to the results of the pool test kit. The pool test kit should have guidelines on the type and amount of chemicals to add in case you have to adjust your chemical levels. Healthy chemical levels keep the water clean and clear and prevent algae growth.
Step 3
Scrub the sides and bottom of the backyard pool with a long-handled pool brush every two weeks during bathing season. This helps prevent algae growth in the pool.
Step 4
Clean the pool filter according to the manufacturer’s instructions and let the pool filter run continuously for 24 to 48 hours, if the water is cloudy after adjusting chemical levels.
Step 5
Add a pool water clarifier according to the instructions on the product label and let the pool filter run for 12 to 24 hours if the water is still cloudy after cleaning the filter. Repeat the clarifying treatment again if necessary.
